A Summer Tradition: The Cape Cod Baseball League

In the realm of American summer traditions, few institutions carry the weight and nostalgia of the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL). For over a century, this amateur league has not only been a breeding ground for future Major League Baseball stars but also a cornerstone of community spirit across the Cape.
The Origins of the CCBL
Founded in 1885, the Cape Cod Baseball League originally began in Nickerson Field, the very heart of the bustling city of Boston. From these humble beginnings, the league has grown into a prestigious showcase of top collegiate talent during the summer months.
Initially, the league served as a way for local college players to hone their skills in a competitive environment while enjoying the beauty of Cape Cod's landscapes. Over time, it evolved into a hotbed for scouts seeking the next generation of baseball stars. Many of today's MLB legends, including Carlton Fisk, Nomar Garciaparra, and Jacoby Ellsbury, once played on the fields of Cape Cod, highlighting its role as a springboard to professional careers. The first round pick in the last four MLB drafts all spend time in the CCBL.
The Magic of a Summer Evening at the Ballpark
What makes the Cape Cod Baseball League endure as a cherished summer tradition? For one, it's the simplicity and purity of the game. Unlike the commercialized atmosphere of major league stadiums, CCBL games offer an authentic baseball experience where the focus remains squarely on the diamond and the crack of the bat. The league is run entirely by volunteers and community members; with local families hosting the players. Everyone joins in simply for the love of the game.
Moreover, attending a CCBL game is more than just watching baseball; it's a community affair. Families gather on blankets, fans cheer from wooden bleachers, and local businesses rally behind their hometown teams. The league's ten teams are spread across Cape Cod by about an hour and a half drive. This makes it easy to travel to cheer on your hometown team or find a field close to you when visiting. The games foster a deep sense of local pride and camaraderie.
Beyond its athletic significance, the CCBL contributes substantially to the Cape Cod economy and culture. Each summer, thousands of visitors come to the Cape to witness these games, bringing a boost in tourism revenue and an appreciation for the region's beauty.
You will not regret heading to a game this summer. Watch the sunset over the field, grab a hotdog, some crackerjacks, and don’t forget to sing take me out to the ballgame in the 7th inning stretch.

Celebrate Dad on Cape Cod this Summer

Fathers Day falls on June 16th this year, and is the perfect time of year to get outside and plan a day that dad will love. On Cape Cod there is a collection of events you can check out to celebrate and show appreciation for all the Fathers out there . Simply enjoying quality time together amidst the natural beauty of the Cape, you're sure to create cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
Visit a Car Show
The Hyannis Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for their annual Main Street Fathers Day Car Show on Sunday from 8:30am-2pm. This is the largest car show in New England featuring over 350 classic cars. If your dad loves his cars, nothing will make him happier than you joining him for an afternoon of admiring the classics. The Hyannis Main St. shops will also be open for shopping and dining as well as pop up vendors to check out
The Cape Cod Classics Car Club has a cruise night every Saturday from 4:30-7:30 at Patriot Square in South Dennis. The first of the summer will be May 25th. This is a great thing to check out all summer if you can’t fit it into your Father’s Day Weekend on the Cape.
The Heritage Museum and Gardens in Sandwich also hosts an annual auto show, where all cars are invited and displayed on Parade Field. If your dad has a car of his own he loves to show off, encourage him to check this out! The 52nd Annual Auto Show will be on June 8th this year from 10am-2pm
If dad is a little too into cars, challenge him to a Go Kart race after the show. The Cape has a few places to bring a little friendly family competition in Harwich, South Dennis, and South Yarmouth.
Head to a Cape Cod Baseball Game
The first Cape League baseball game of the 2024 season is June 15th, just in time to take dad out to the ball field. All 10 teams have games on Father's Day starting between 5 and 7pm. Check out the schedule to see if there will be a game near you during Father’s Day weekend.
Take Dad Out to Eat on the Water
Toast to your dad with a glass of wine or champagne over dinner with a view. Keep it casual and head to the Chatham fish pier for a picnic table meal , or treat him to a dining experience at Wequassett Outer Bar and Grill. Just make sure it's something dad will love, and don't forget to let him pick where you head afterwards for dessert with the family.

Cape Cod Beer in Hyannis will be hosting a Pig Roast with Red River barbeque from 12-2pm on Sunday. Tickets are sold online for this all you can eat BBQ buffet. The brewery will be open from 12-6 and have live music all day. All ages are welcome, so you can bring the whole family and enjoy some time in the beer garden.
A Day on The Green
If your dad is an avid golfer, treat him to a round of golf at one of Cape Cod's premier courses. The Cape has some beautiful fairways and stunning ocean views, making it a truly unforgettable experience. After your round, unwind at the clubhouse with a refreshing drink and soak in the coastal ambiance. Whether you're a seasoned golfer or a beginner, spending the day on the greens is a fantastic way to celebrate Father's Day.
Get out on the Water
If you have an adventurous family, consider booking a charter fishing trip where you and your dad can reel in the catch of the day while enjoying panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. Alternatively, embark on a kayaking expedition through Cape Cod's marshes and see what luck will bring you.
No mater what you choose to fill the day with, the most important part is that it will make dad happy. Fathers do so much for us so take the day as an opportunity to show your appreciation back. Fill the day with love, smiles, and good fun on the Cape.

THE COLLEGE LIGHT OPERA COMPANY

Highfield Theatre was once the stable for Highfield Hall, the beautifully restored 1878 mansion that shares the hilltop property surrounded by the Beebe Woods conservation land. The Falmouth Theatre Guild specializes in Broadway musicals produced fall through spring; in summer, Highfield Theatre is home to the renowned College Light Opera Co. This month’s line-up begins with Lerner & Loewe’s hilarious musical, Brigadoon (June 18-22). Then, catch the comic opera Iolanthe from June 25-29.

This dual venue houses an art gallery and a theater, which stages dynamic plays. The Playground runs from June 6 to 23. This full-length, one-woman play by Jim Dangleish explores themes of class and life in New York City. Catch Twisted Broadway on June 7 & 8. The historic Cape Playhouse, which has been producing professional summertime theatre for more than 90 years, runs June through August, with a great line-up of comedies, musicals, and more. The summer season begins with the musical Tick, Tick… Boom (June 5-15). Jonathan Larson, the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning composer of Rent, first created this semi-autobiographical explosive, and joyful rock-musical about creativity, the fear of mortality, and the power of music to change the world. Next, catch Million Dollar Quartet. This Tony Award-nominated musical captures the exact moment when four major talents came together to become a rock ’n’ roll band.

CCTC is the home of the Harwich Jr. Theatre, which has great offerings for the younger set, including classes in musical theater, acting, and more. It’s also a major venue for adults. At the end of the month, catch The Drowsy Chaperone (June 26-July 21).

Cape Cod Museum of Art celebrates the work of artists with a Cape Cod connection, past to present. The museum includes seven indoor exhibition spaces and is surrounded by a sculpture garden set on beautiful grounds. This summer, over 30 large sculptures are installed on the 22-acre Cape Cod Center for the Arts campus in the Cape Cod Open Sculpture Invitational (CCOSI). Inside the Museum, Showman With A Paintbrush: The Life and Art of Arthur V. Diehlis on view through July 23. Diehl was a historically significant figure in the Provincetown art scene. The exhibition features his masterful, atmospheric, and often historically accurate paintings that capture the importance of Provincetown as a major fishing port between the mid-1800s and the 1920s, on. Curated by Diehl’s granddaughter, Eugenia Diehl Pell, this exhibition will coincide with the release of Diehl’s definitive biography. This month, you’ll also find Departures: an International Juried Exhibition. A full schedule of art classes for youth and adults is offered year-round. Their Sunday Summer Concert showcases local musicians performing in a wide range of genres in the sculpture garden. Heritage Museums and Gardens

Heritage Museums and Gardens sits on 100 sprawling acres, complete with walking trails, outdoor discovery opportunities, gardens, classic automobiles, and more. This year, learn about the New England Impressionist movement with the exhibit: Impressionist New England: Four Seasons of Color and Light. New England has long captured Impressionist painters’ attention, both as a setting and a subject. This exhibit explores work from artist colonies around the region. Cotuit artist Alfred Glover is showcased in the exhibit; Alfred Glover in the Garden. Enjoy colorful depictions of animals, trees, and other wildlife around Heritage’s grounds and gardens.
View a traditional Wampanoag Wetu structure on the lawn of Heritage’s 17th Century House. This full-scale reproduction of a Wetu alongside a Wampanoag-style vegetable garden was constructed by members of the Wampanoag Tribe, following centuries-old construction methods. The placement of the Wetu beside the 17th-century house provides a powerful juxtaposition between the English colonists and Native Wampanoag people.
This year’s automobile exhibit, From Carriage to Classic: How Automobiles Transformed America, presents the story of the automobile’s evolution. Explore vehicles from the late 1800s to the 1960s to understand how the automobile evolves. In Charging Ahead: Early Electric Cars in America, Heritage offers examples of early electro vehicles and their charges, such as a 1908 Bailey Electric.
Provincetown Art Assoc. & Museum

PAAM is a nationally recognized, year-round cultural institution and a major influence in the art culture of Cape Cod. This important museum features the work of artists connected to Provincetown. Rosalind Pace is best recognized for her vivid and stirring poems. Rosalind Pace: Poiesis, Five Decades of Collage, on display until June 23, showcases her passion for visual art. View her collection of collages crafted over 5 decades. Julia Salinger: The Insistence of Memory is on display until July 7. In this multimedia exhibition, Salinger explores the question: “Why do we choose to retain certain moments and filter the rest, while other lost fragments emerge years later.” An Outer Cape Village: Photographs of Marnie Crawford Samuelson profiles fishermen, artists, and makers who live and work on the Outer Cape. The work of Marnie Crawford Samuelson will be on display until July 21. Find these and many more excellent exhibits this month at PAAM.

Wellfleet Preservation Hall is a wonderful cultural center that uses the transformational power of the arts to bring people together and impact positive change. It is a community center that celebrates people from all backgrounds and walks of life. This May, the Preservation Hall will be showing the work of members from the New England Wax (N.E.W.) organization in an exhibition titled Transparency from May 21 through June 27. Transparency, featuring works from 27 artists, seeks to investigate the concept of transparency in all its forms. Utilizing light, texture, form, and color, works in this exhibition play with the literal qualities of transparency, with pieces that are both ethereal or illusory and grounded in the physical world.

Cape Cod Beach Yoga provides a unique opportunity to practice yoga surrounded by the beauty of nature. Led by experienced instructors, classes are held on sandy shores overlooking the ocean, offering a rejuvenating experience for body and mind. Each instructor recommends bringing a towel, sunglasses, and a water bottle. This Beach in Harwich offers daily beach yoga from June 15- September 2nd 2024 at 7:30am. The classes are drop-in and the cost is $20. There is free beach parking. The instructor also teaches indoors at the Center for the Spiritual Journey in Chatham.
Chatham Lighthouse Beach
Chatham Lighthouse Beach sits at the far south end of Main Street, not far from the downtown area. Yoga will be taught every day from June 15th- September 8th 2024. The sessions get started at 7:30 AM and run until 8:45 and parking is free before 9:00 AM. There is a $20 drop-in fee, and you don’t have to pre-register
Mayo Beach
This beach in Wellfleet has yoga sessions every Tuesday and Thursday in the summer from June 25th- September 4th 2024. The class starts at 8:30AM with each session costing $20.
A Bit of Bliss Yoga
If you are not a morning person you are still in luck, as this yoga studio holds sessions daily at 7:30 pm, starting on June 21st for the 2024 season. Interested members will receive an email the morning of, indicating what Mid-Cape beach the class will take place on, as well as the opportunity to pre register.
Craigville Beach

We teamed up with the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod to round up some of the best FREE ways to experience arts and culture on Cape Cod this summer.
Town Band Concerts, Cape-Wide
Most towns on the Cape offer a free band concert every week until Labor Day. These community events are a wonderful way to experience live music performed by local and regional artists. Bring along comfy chairs, a blanket, and a picnic. There’s nothing like the experience of enjoying a warm summer evening of live music.
Concerts of note include Chatham’s Friday Night Bandstand Concert at the Kate Gould Park, live music at the Nauset Beach Bandstand on Monday nights, Aselton Park’s Tuesday night concert series in Hyannis, and the Harwich Town Band concerts on Tuesday nights at Brooks Park. Also, check out the TD Bank Free Summer Concert Series with free performances all over the Cape this summer.
Yarmouth Sand Sculpture Trail, Yarmouth
The Yarmouth Sand Sculpture Trail is back for the 11th year! This fun, family-friendly attraction features 32 creative sand sculptures spread around the town of Yarmouth. Find the sculptures through September at various businesses and town offices in Yarmouth.

Taylor-Bray Farm, Yarmouth
This historic farm and homestead is a hidden gem in Yarmouth. Even many locals have never heard of this cool spot. Taylor-Bray Farm has been operating since the days of the Plymouth Colony. It is now run entirely by volunteers who maintain the property to exceptional standards.
Check out the large vegetable garden, then visit the animals! You’ll find a few very friendly goats, a large chicken coop, a couple of donkeys, and Chloe: the gorgeous Scottish Highland Cow. Visitors in the spring may get the chance to see baby lambs.
Be sure to walk out on the boardwalk that stretches into Black Flats Marsh. Like all marshes on the Cape, this spot looks drastically different with every season but is always stunningly beautiful.
The Samual Taylor Farmhouse on site was built in 1782. The house has been recently renovated and furnished with period pieces and a rotating display of farm artifacts in the summer. Be sure to mark your calendar for their Sheep Festival in June and the Fall Festival in October.
Art in the Park, Chatham
This summer, Chatham’s Art in the Park features large whale cutouts decorated by artists around the Cape. This fun public art event is on display at the Kate Gould Park until August 19. This year’s whales are absolutely stunning and incredibly versatile. Highlights include stained glass designs, gorgeous coastal landscape paintings, and ornately crafted shells. This event serves as a fundraiser for the Chatham Merchants Association, and you can even bid on your favorite whale.
While you’re in Chatham, you’ll want to keep an eye out for the Oars in the Stores. These large decorated oars are embellished by local artists. Visit the Visitor Info booth on Main Street to find the Oars in the Stores scavenger hunt booklet. The decorated oars are featured in businesses around Chatham and you can win a prize by tracking them down!
Artists Cottages and Shanties, Hyannis, Orleans, Provincetown, and Harwich
Meet and support local artists at the art cottages in Hyannis, Orleans, Provincetown, and Harwich. Start with the Bismore Park Artist Shanties on the harbor in Hyannis. This program, run by the town of Hyannis, provides affordable rental space and visibility for local artists. Artists change weekly throughout the season. The park features picnic tables and plenty of grass to spread a blanket and hang out for a while. It is so fun to chat with the local artists. Since they rotate weekly, it’s great to stop by a few times this summer.
The Art Cottages in downtown Orleans are also of note. Created with the intention of enriching the quality of life for residents and visitors, the Orleans Art Cottages celebrate the talent of local artists and creators. This small colony of cottages is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. There are also art cottages in Harwich and Provincetown.

Tour the Three Sisters Lighthouses, Eastham
These three small lighthouses once sat on the edge of the Atlantic at Nauset Light Station. Relocated and restored, you can visit them in their original orientation in the pine forests of Cable Road in Eastham. Before they were acquired by the National Park Service, they sold at auction for $3.50! One also spent a period of time as a dance studio. These little lighthouses have had quite a life. Explore their history & importance every Monday at 11 am (through August 29). Parking is limited.
Craft Fairs and Festivals, Cape-Wide
Cape Cod is home to many craft fairs and festivals during the summer. Spend a morning or afternoon exploring the work of local crafters, creators, artists, musicians, and artisan food makers. Craft fairs are a great way to support artists and creators. It’s so fun to find unique pieces and sample delicious handcrafted delicacies.
Check out the Sandwich Arts and Crafts Festival this weekend (July 30-31), the Chatham Summer Crafts Festival (August 6-7), CraftFest Cotuit (August 20-21), and the Kill Tide Arts and Craft Festival at the Brewster Drummer Boy Park (August 27-28).

Family Friendly Movie at the Orpheum Theater, Chatham
Every day this summer, the Orpheum Theatre offers a free family-friendly movie at 9:30 am. Pick up your free ticket at the box office. Doors open at 9. Check their Facebook page for details on the line-up. Enjoy coffee and muffins while revisiting old family-friendly favorites as well as newer tales. Don’t miss the gorgeous mural as you enter the theater.

Spohr Gardens, Falmouth
Enjoy a relaxing walk through a 6-acre woodland garden in Falmouth. This hidden gem features trails that wind along Oyster Pond and Nantucket Sound. The gardens are open daily from 8 am to 8 pm and are free to the public. Spohr Gardens has a butterfly garden created to raise and release butterflies, as well as attract many species of moths and butterflies. There are also greenhouses where volunteers raise butterflies from eggs to pupae.
Don’t miss Butterfly Celebration Day on August 6 from 10 am to 2 pm. This free, family-friendly event features a release of butterflies as well as activities for children.

The Cape is filled with secret nooks and corners… that’s what makes this little peninsula so special. While none of these places are really a secret, they are definitely cool spots to visit. Here are some of our favorite off-the-beaten-path places to add to your Cape Cod Bucket list this summer.
Chatham Light Beach Shack, Chatham
Find this cute little beach shack on Chatham Light Beach, about a quarter-mile walk from the lighthouse. This waterfront property is constantly changing as visitors decorate the shack with flotsam and jetsam. Owned by everyone and yet no one at all, this funny little shack even has its own Facebook page.
The Knob, Falmouth
A quarter-mile trail leads to the perfect spot to watch a sunset over Buzzards Bay. On a clear day, you can see the Elizabeth Island and New Bedford.
Walk the short trail from the parking area at the end of Quissett Harbor Rd for beautiful views. Please stay on the trails and respect this beautiful conservation land.
Scargo Tower, Dennis
The iconic cobblestoned Scargo Tower stretches 30 feet high and is located atop the highest hill in the mid-Cape, overlooking Scargo Lake. This cool spot began as a tourist observatory in 1874. Originally made of wood, two versions of the tower were destroyed by wind and fire before the current structure was built in 1901.
Climb to the top to see sweeping views of the entire Lower Cape to Provincetown and as far west as Plymouth. There are interesting indigenous creation stories about Scargo Hill and Lake that are fun to learn before visiting this cool spot.
Long Point, Provincetown
At the tip of Cape Cod, Long Point is the perfect location if you’re looking to get away from it all. This rugged landscape features breathtaking views of Provincetown from across the harbor, plus the awe-inspiring sight of the expansive blue Atlantic. Long Point Lighthouse is one of the main features of this area. This picturesque old lighthouse is tucked behind grassy dunes, overlooking Long Point Beach.
Spend the day swimming, exploring, and bathing in the warm summer sun to get the most out of this unique spot; you’ll feel like you’re at the end of the Earth. During the summer, get there via the Long Point Shuttle from MacMillan Pier. Year-round, walk the 1-mile Provincetown causeway— the jetty that bridges the end of Commercial Street and Long Point. Be sure to check the tide before crossing as the jetty is dangerous and impassable around high tide.
The Stony Brook Grist Mill, Brewster
The Stony Brook Grist Mill & Museum is the only remaining structure from Brewster’s Factory Village, a once-thriving 19th-century industrial hub. This restored mill on Stony Brook Road is open every Saturday in the summer. Stop by to see the water wheel in motion and purchase freshly ground corn meal! After checking out the mill and attached museum, take some time to wander the footpaths along the brook to see a variety of wildlife.
In the spring, visit the brook to see the annual herring migration. From around mid-March into May watch the herring jump up the fish ladders of Stony Brook as they migrate from Cape Cod Bay to the freshwater ponds of West Brewster to spawn. Truro Tequila Zarza
2 oz Tierra Noble Reposado Tequila
1 oz Simple Syrup
1 oz Fresh Lemon Juice
Blackberries
Float: Creme de Cassis Liqueur
Combine all ingredients, excluding liqueur. Shake well. Strain and serve over crushed ice in a rocks glass. Float liqueur on top. Garnish with fresh blackberries.
Gardener’s Gin Sour
1.5 oz Greenall’s Gin
.5 oz Simple Syrup
.5 oz Lemon Juice
Basil leaves (for muddling & garnish)
Muddle basil in the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Fill shaker with ice. Add remaining ingredients.
Shake well. Double strain into an ice-filled rocks glass. Garnish with basil leaf.
Race Point Raspberry Lemonade
1.5 oz Grays Peak Vodka
.5 oz Raspberry Liqueur
2 oz lemonade
Raspberries and Lemon Wheel for garnish
Mix ingredients in a glass with ice and stir. Garnish with lemon wheels or raspberries.
